Sometimes life gets complicated—I can relate. One of my teachers shared this poem with me a while back and I have such gratitude for its depth. It’s a great reminder that everything in our life has meaning and moves us further on our path of growth if we just stop swimming against the tides and surrender. I hope this poem serves as a reminder to you as well. Show yourself love, compassion and forgiveness for all of you, as you thank the darkest parts that are there to open the path of light and healing that awaits you if you let it.
The Guest House
This being human is a guest house.
Every morning a new arrival.
A joy, a depression, a meanness,
some momentary awareness comes
as an unexpected visitor.
Welcome and entertain them all!
Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,
who violently sweep your house
empty of its furniture,
still, treat each guest honorably.
He may be clearing you out
for some new delight.
The dark thought, the shame, the malice.
meet them at the door laughing and invite them in.
Be grateful for whatever comes.
because each has been sent
as a guide from beyond.
