Dr. Frank Lipman has an enlightening and honest conversation with Danielle Walker about the power of healing your gut with diet.
In their conversation, they talk about Danielle’s story, diet and supplements for gut healing and Danielle’s Against All Grains books.
Danielle was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease at age 22 and although all her doctors told her diet didn’t matter, she felt differently. This instinct inspired her to explore what she was eating and how it could be adding flame to the fire of her already very inflamed gut. Based on the original Special Carbohydrate Diet (SCD) and book Breaking the Vicious Cycle by Elaine Gottschall, Danielle adapted her diet by removing all grains, dairy and legumes to start. On her website she tells her entire journey here. Experiencing healing from this diet and adapting from others like Paleo, Danielle started a blog to help others suffering so they too can enjoy food. Today Danielle is a New York Times Best Selling Author of several books and an inspiration to many.
My favorite part of the podcast is when they get honest about how medicine is sometimes needed. This is something I have personally struggled with myself. Regardless of everything you ARE doing right to support your health, we shouldn’t be too proud to integrate medications if necessary. Many people think that integrative and functional practitioners never resort to medications, but this is simply not true. Sometimes, we all need a “life-jacket” and there should be no shame about that.

Danielle Walker on the powers of a grain-free diet
In this episode of Tune Into Wellness with Dr. Frank Lipman, we sit down with Danielle Walker, the author and photographer of the New York Times best-selling cookbook “Against All Grain.” At age 22, Walker was diagnosed with a painful autoimmune disease. Doctors told her changing her diet wouldn’t help ease her symptoms — but she had a sneaking suspicion they were wrong.
Almost 10 years ago, Walker removed all grains and legumes from her diet, and it has made a major difference in managing the symptoms of her ulcerative colitis. Soon, she became passionate about helping other people who suffer from similar illnesses continue to enjoy delicious, nourishing food. In addition to her first cookbook, “Against All Grain,” Walker also reaches people through her popular Instagram page. In addition to sharing recipes, she also promotes the benefits of self-care.
Dr. Lipman also talks with Walker about her newest cookbook, “Eat What You Love,” a compilation of healthy, gluten-free, and dairy-free recreations of classic comfort foods.
