Your liver is one of the hardest worked organs in the body, it’s actually part of your digestive system and the main hub for detoxification. It helps to absorb all the good stuff we ingest, while spitting out all the bad stuff we consume including absorption of environmental toxins we don’t have much control over.
Everything you consume passes through your liver, from your healthy green smoothie at breakfast to the few cocktails you had at your nephews wedding, including the antacid you took before the celebration and then the Tylenol you needed afterwards. Add this to your daily cholesterol medication and it’s quite a party going on in there.
So knowing how much the liver does for us, we don’t thank it enough by giving it a vacation. What happens is it becomes over burdened and sluggish and has a hard time keeping up with it’s demand.
Some of the symptoms that might show up and could possibly be an indicator of liver congestion are:
Digestive issues like constipation, bloating, heartburn and trouble digesting fats
Weight gain that is stubborn and is hard to take off
Hormone imbalances
Skin issues like acne or itchiness
Fatigue
Bad breath or a white coating on your tongue
Chemical sensitivities
Cravings for sugar and carbs
Abdominal pain
Gall bladder trouble
With all this in mind your liver will thank you for some much needed assistance. Here are a few general recommendations to consider:
Eat organic when possible to reduce ingesting toxins from pesticides, hormones and antibiotics.
Give your liver a vacation from alcohol for a while. 0-3 drinks per week after the vacation is best.
Give up the plastic water bottles and refuse your receipts since they tax your liver with endocrine disruptors like BPA.
Consume antioxidants like berries, dark chocolate, onions and parsley.
Eat cruciferous veggies like broccoli, cabbage and brussel sprouts.
Move your body and sweat out toxins through the skin.
Use a sauna to aid in detoxification. Infrared Saunas are great if you have access to one, but a regular sauna at your local gym helps too.
Coffee Enemas are a great way to stimulate the liver.
Enjoy an epsom salt bath. It’s cheap and helps to destress and detox the whole body.
Drink a cup of Milk Thistle Tea.
Dry Brush your skin daily before you shower.
If you do have any severe symptoms, seek medical care to rule out and serious health issues. Once you get the green light, using one or more of these suggestions listed can help to restore function over time.
